I've been away for a long time now.

No excuses other than life.

Got caught up in it.

Here lately my taste of music has reverted back to country.

I've been out of the loop as to who the artists are and who's hot right now.

There is an artist by the name of Miranda Lambert that I have taking a liking to.

One of her singles that is out now reminds of a special place.

A place where most of my childhood memories are.

I Rescued A Human Today

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.

I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn't want her to know that I hadn't been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn't want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn't feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone's life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.

I would promise to keep her safe.

I would promise to always be by her side.

I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.

I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven't walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

I rescued a human today.

I have done something that I thought long and hard about.

Something that apparently I have been very passionate about and have just now

discovered about myself.

I have become a volunteer at the Greenville Humane Society.

Animals have always been a big part of my life.

I've had pets of all sorts.

I have been attacked by a dog.

Not once.

But twice.

I feel that it is time to give back the love that has been given to me by so

many four legged friends.

Starting next month I will be walking dogs,

cleaning kennels,

doing their laundry,

feeding and watering,

and anything else that needs to be done.

Doing what I feel I have been called to do.

I am very excited.

Can't wait to get started.

For those of you who know me know that when it comes to math

I am not the sharpest tool in the shed.

So who knew school systems now teach geometry in second grade?

trapezoid - I think I remember that from BASIC math.

I don't know why, but I love to sit and look through old cookbooks. Especially church cookbooks.

They are the first place I go when wanting to try something new or to find something familiar.

I love to cook but don't really do a whole lot of it with Larry's work schedule and not to mention I have a picky 8 year old.

Anyhoo.

Upon browsing I stumbled upon this cute recipe.

Little did I know I had been working on this very recipe for many years now.

"How to Preserve a Spouse"

Make your selection carefully and let it be for keeps.

Choose on young and tenderand of good moral growth.

If selected carefully, they will last for years.

Do not pickle or put in hot water because this makes them sour and hard.

Neither should you roast them or keep them in a stew.

To preserve, sweeten with tender love and kindness.

Flavor with kisses and envelope in patience.

Wrap well in a mantle of kindness.

Simmer gently over low heat of steady and warm devotion.

The poorest variety may be improved by this process and if well seasoned with the deeds of human kindness, will improve with age and last forever.

I am in heaven!

General Mills had to be thinking of me!

Surprisingly enough these Cheerios are NOT as sweet

as you would imagine them to be.

There is just enough of a hint of cocoa to say it's there

but still has the whole grain texture and taste Cheerios is known for.

I have to say they are so good Shelby and I eat them straight out

of the box. We haven't even tried them with milk yet!

It's a great snack just the way it is.

With the sub freezing temperatures comes ice.

One thing I have trouble getting used to is seeing the pond

on the apartment complex property iced over.

The funny thing that about this picture is that the

ducks only have a small ring of water to swim in.

Larry tried to test the thickness of the ice by chunking a

rock onto the ice thinking the consistency was more like a slushie.

To his amazement, it actually skidded across the ice.

Who'd a thunk it?

One thing I made sure I did as a mother was to let Shelby

know that through the thick and thin of it all she was loved deeply

by me and her father.
A simple "I love you"
at the start of the day,
randomly through the day,
in her lunch as a note on a napkin,
etc.
especially at bedtime.

Today it came back trifold.

While sitting in the living room watching tv

Shelby came to me and said,

"You haven't had your hug and kiss today. I love you, Mommy."

That was it.

She went back to coloring as if nothing happened.

My heart is a lump of love.

My mom and sister have posted about their CHRISTmas trees that are

a working progress.

I figured I should post about my punny tree.

As a child, as far back as I can remember we always had a live tree.

So as an adult it seemed like that was something I should also continue to do.

Starting last year I converted to artificial.

Though I still prefer a live tree, it'll have to do.

I was inspired by my mom's blog who was

in turn inspired by another blog to Google

my needs list.

Since my name has an unusual spelling I had to use

the more common spelling of Angela.

So here's my "needs" list

1.Angela needs to get away from her kids.

2.Angela needs her space.

3.Angela needs to constantly "feel" the presence of God.

4. Angela needs to name her pig.

5. Angela needs help.

6. Angela needs to get pregnant NOW!

7. Angela needs 20 quarts of 50% antifreeze solution in her radiator.

8. Angela needs a share in Victoria, BC.

9.Angela needs a physcological evaluation.

10. Angela needs to clean house some more and cut out some dead weight.

I would keep on going but it seems to repeat that Angela needs to name her pig.

I can't help to wonder why her pig needs a name so desperatley.

I'm sorry I haven't posted.

Honestly, time gets away from me.

Then my life is a bore.

Nothing new has occured in the past few weeks.

Thanksgiving came and went.

It was very nice.

Just the three of us.

I cooked the full spread.

I ate the full spread.

(it felt like it anyway).

Larry is well. Working the usual second shift.

Shelby is very well.

Growing and then growing some more.

Not much else to offer.

The washer sloshing.

The dryer humming.

Not in my house.

When my washer finishes spinning I hear things rolling around.

As my dryer does it's thing I often hear what sounds like rocks

ricocheting around.

So I go to inspect.

After doing a load of my daughter's clothes

I find this type of thing waiting for me.

Family outing

Sundays have become Family Day.

With Larry working nights during the week Shelby and I don't see him much.

So Saturdays are devoted to resting, housework, etc.

Sundays we do things like watch movies, play games, or do whatever.

Together as a family.

Today we went to my favorite spot in Greenville.

Falls Park on the Reedy.

This being my favorite time of year I knew it would be beautiful.

And it was.

While at the park we stopped at a cafe where she got a scoop of ice cream

and we got a cup of coffee.

(a balloon artist was there and Shelby got a fish on a pole)

After a great afternoon at the park we came home and

cooked steaks on the grill.

It was a great day.

I think the weather up here put a damper on Halloween spirit.

After doing some asking around we ended up at

It was cool trick ot treating in a grocery store.

Each dept had a little game set up for the kids with treats as rewards.

After Publix we drove around some neighborhoods

A tribute to our dogs

There isn't a day that doesn't go by that I don't think about

my little sister Sadie Vanessa.

Everyday as a ritual when I come home from picking up Shelby

from school, I grab the mail keys that are on a special keyring.

The keys are kept in a glass on the shelf in the hallway.

As soon as the keys jingle Gennie comes a-runnin'

knowing that it's time to get the mail.

All you would have to do with Sadie is say,

"Sadie, let me ask you something."

and she would take that as

"Let's go get the mail!'

I don't know what it is about the mail, but to the dogs in our

families it's a ritual and to the them it's the world.

I love Sadie Vanessa!

Just like everyone else in this country, today stirs deep memories

and nightmares.

I was working at the dialysis center in Louisville, Ga. and was five months pregnant with Shelby.

Watching Good Morning America with a patient named Charlie Brown.

The newscaster had just mentioned that a plane had flown into the first tower.

I had just gotten the words, "How does a plane just fly into the World Trade Center? They have been there for how long?" when I witnessed the second plane fly into the second tower.

I remember calling Mom who was about to lay down for her nap and asked if she had been watching the news. She knew nothing about it and said she would let Dad know.

After several attempts she let me know that that Fort Gordon was on total lockdown.

No one in.

No one out.

The same for phone calls.

The rest of the day is a blur of images.

I do remember driving home in tears wondering what the world was going to be like when I brought my baby into it.

What kind of life would she live?

Would she always live in fear?

For weeks anything with the colors red, white, and blue could not be found.

American flags were on backorder in every store.

Now more than ever the words

"Unites we stand"

ring louder and more true than ever as well as

"God Bless America".

For those of you who know Shelby, you know that she has had a fear of water

Well, the fear has been conquered.

As of today, Shelby now LOVES the water.

She has always liked the water except when it reaches her neck.

I know these aren't snow follow up pictures but that's old news.

Occasionally Shelby comes to me and asks if she can take some

pictures on my camera.

Most of the time I say yes.

I then grimace when she returns it to me not knowing what I'm going to find

when I press the review button.

However, this time it was different.

She seemed to have an artistic eye for detail.

My absolute fave.

The shadows and colors compliment each other so

perfectly.

Not so much artistic but it leaves much to the imagination.

A rare sight to southerners.

We got some of this strange white stuff here in Greenville.

3 inches to be exact.

Today was the big day.

The American Heart Association's

Jump Rope for Heart.

The first graders jumped "Chinese"

(I'm thinking due to coordination or lack there of)

Shelby and Callie "doubling"

Guessing jump rope is not cool for boys.

As of this afternoon Pelham Road Elementary School had raised

an estimated $7,000.

The dramatics are becoming less and less with each tooth that comes out.

This is #4.

It was extremly loose when we sent her to school on Monday.

Larry picked her from school while I was at a doctor's appointment

and somehow it got bumped out.

She turned to Larry with tooth in hand and said,

"Here, Daddy. My tooth came out."

That's it.

No crying.

No hysterics.

I'm guessing she's used to the idea by now.

And I am, too.

Precious Memories

This past weekend Shelby and I took a trip to Columbus, Georgia.

Home of Granny and Grandpa.

Shelby doesn't realize it now but the time she spends with her great grandparents is time she will always cherish.

I have early childhood memories of Mawmaw and Pawpaw.

Sitting with the Sears catalog and preparing a shopping list of wants.

"I buy that."

Walking up the steep driveway on Valleybrook Rd to them sitting on the front porch with the Camellia bush in full bloom.

The slam of the storm door echoing in the neighborhood.

The smell of Pawpaws pipe.

Mawmaw's crocheting.

How I miss them.

Things were very different this year.

At first we didn't know what to do or how to act.

So, we did our best.

Christmas Eve Shelby and I baked cookies for Santa.

Party like a 1st Grader

Today was the last day of school for every school aged

child in the southeast.

The amount of time they are out -

2 WEEKS!!!

For all of you out there, be afraid.

BE VERY AFRAID.

For today was also their Christmas parties at school.

And that means SUGAR.

Shelby and her class had a good time.

They played games like putting Rudolph's nose in the right spot.

Shelby got dizzy when she was spun around.

"Santa" came to visit as well.

But Shelby said he was fake.

"That was a pillow under his jacket, that's how I know."

She knows that the REAL Santa is at the North Pole and that he has lots of helpers that look like him because he needs help.

We had an incident a couple weeks ago where one of the children in her class told Shelby that Santa wasn't real.

She came home so upset.

When I asked her what she thought she told me she believes in Santa, the Tooth Fairy, Jesus, and God. Oh, and all other fairies, too.

I melted.

Instead of doing a toy gift exchange, the class did a book exchange instead.

Shelby got a Barbie book.

She was pleased with hers.

Ready for Christmas!!

Tooth #3!!

Tooth number three has fallen out.

Well, sorta.

It had been very loose for about a week or so and didn't look like it was going to let go.

So we helped it along.

But only on Shelby's terms.

She first wanted to tie a string to Sebastian's tail and have him pull it out for her.

He didn't want any part of that.

She then suggested we thumb tack the string to the wall and she would run and pull it out.

That didn't happen either.

While she had her back turned to me, I snuck up behind her, grabbed the string that was tied to her tooth and pulled it out.

The Tooth Fairy brought her

a High School Musical nitelite

for her room and another gold dollar.

Shelby is still amazed by the whole thing.

Still unsure of the scheme of things and how the Tooth Fairy knows when a tooth is ready to be picked up.

All is well in Greenville.

The life of a six year old

This is going to be an update of the past couple of months as Shelby lived them.

In October children begin the quest of the perfect costume.

Shelby was " 'Punzel ".

In November the holiday season is officially underway as we prepare to gorge ourselves of turkey and all the fixings.

Each class in the first grade put together a little re-enactment of the first Thanksgiving.

Shelby was a pilgrim.

The Fulmer family came up for a few days to celebrate Thanksgiving with us.

Shelby's bff Nic and his older brother Justin.

Shortly after Thanksgiving, we began preparing for the Christmas season.

Shelby has her special ornaments that have accumaleted over the past six years.

In tradition , she puts those on the tree.

Every year Larry's company provides the children of their employees a fun day in place of a Christmas party.

This year we went to Gatti Town.

It's an elaborate form of Chuck E. Cheese's.

Dominating the game of Air Hockey.

She "beat" Mommy, Daddy, and Mr. Brandon!

Always a guaranteed good time on the carousel.

Last night I was watching the 11:00 local news, when I heard that my favorite author of all time was at one of Greenville's bookstores for a book signing.

That's right.

was approximately three miles from my front door.

And where was I?

Sitting on my thumbs at home doing NOTHING!

My friend Tenisha said I was the perfect ad for ATT&T.

That one day I would look back at this and laugh

or CRY!

(A lot like that fan of Michael Phelps)

So when I found this out, Tenisha looked up on his website to see where he was scheduled to appear next, she discovered he was going to be in Charlotte, NC.

That's an hour and a half from here.

For those of you who know me, you know that I would have driven up there and not thought twice about it.

But with the gas shortage and the price of gas if you can find it being what it is, I decided against it.

But could you imagine having a first edition autographed copy of one of today's most popular author's?

(Sigh..)

You know when someone has their house or any other type of private property such as a car vandalized they say they feel violated?

Yeah, well, it's true.

Larry, Shelby, and I left this morning to go to school as we normally do.

Took her to school and ran a couple of errands.

The weather here had been cool so I didn't pay much attention to what at the time I thought was dew on my car windows.

When making a turn into the parking lot of a parts store Larry and I heard what sounded like beads rolling around in the back dash. We both turned around to see what maybe Shelby had put up the window when Larry said,

"Your back windshield is busted!"

Sure enough.

So after a few choice words we drove back to the apartment where I filed a report with the management office in case it had been on their property and called the police to file a report with them.

While standing outside talking to the prpoerty manager one of the maintenance guys asked about what had been done. Come to find out there has been a crime spree here in Greenville where the vandals are shooting in windshields with BB or pellet guns.

So I have been a victim of a what could have been a car break in.

When looking at the glass, near the bottom of the window you can see where the pellets struck the glass not once but twice.

The windows on my car are tinted so honestly I think that was what saved my car from being actually broken into because the glass never gave way.

Does anyone know what the rules are for the toothfairy returning for a second time in a 24 hour time period?

Here's hoping.

Last night the toothfairy brought Shelby a gold dollar coin, the new animated Barbie movie, and a certificate. I think Shelby was amazed by the whole thing.

It's funny how just two missing teeth can change the way you look.

It's goofy looking but very cute at the same time.

The beginning of a Snagglepuss

After much anticipation it's finally happened.

The loss of the FIRST tooth.

It had been loose for what seems forever.

Ok. Several weeks.

Now that she knows there is virtually no pain the next ones will come out at a more rapid pace.

After we wrapped it up and put in the pocket of her Tooth Angel bear she quickly got in her jammies and said that she needed to go to bed so the tooth fairy could come.

I don't think she quite knows what the tooth fairy does, but she knows it's important.

May I introduce the newest member of our family...

SEBASTIAN

He is 16 weeks old.

We got him from one of our neighbors.

First he melted my heart when I saw how he took to Shelby.

She asked if we could keep him and I told her she would have to ask daddy.

Larry has been dead set on not having anymore cats.

But then came Sebastian.

(of course it didn't help when Shelby stuck out her lip and said please as she looked at him with her big brown eyes)

His coloring is completely opposite of Akira's. He's half grey and half white.

Akira has accepted him as a grandson, and well Gennie thinks he's a new toy.

They all get along very well.

Shelby has taken the responsibility of feeding, watering, and cleaning his litterbox.

So he stays in her bathroom when we're gone or asleep.

As for being fixed, that is in the VERY NEAR future.

Since I've started feeding the birds around here, as to be expected we get other types of guests. Such as squirrels. Akira and Gennie have become bird watchers as well. These pictures catch them doing just that. You can only imagine what's going through their heads. These are my interpretations. "Wait for it....
